Why Autumn Is a Good Season for Roof Maintenance

Asphalt shingles should be repaired and maintained when they need it, whether it's in the winter or summer. However, autumn is an ideal season for roof maintenance. The weather is cooler than it is during the hot days of summer, yet the temperatures aren't as cold as they get during the winter. Here's why autumn is a good season for doing maintenance on a shingle roof.
Tree Leaves Have Stopped Falling
Late autumn is a good time to clean the gutters and remove leaves from your roof for the last time before winter. It's important to have clean gutter troughs heading into winter so melted snow and rain drain away from your roof rather than back up and freeze. When the gutters have been cleaned, the cleaning crew can also look for damage and proper drainage in case your gutters need to be serviced.
It's also a good time to sweep your roof when all the leaves have fallen. This gets all the old clumps off so they don't stay on your roof and rot. Wet leaf clumps hold dampness, and the leaves might attract bugs that catch the interest of birds, so it's best to have your roof cleaned at the end of autumn and before frigid weather sets in.
The Weather Is Better for Roofing Materials
The autumn weather is more pleasant for a roofing crew, and it's also better for roofing materials. Shingles might get brittle in cold weather and be more difficult to work with. Adhesives may not bond as well since the outdoor temperatures need to be warm enough for the adhesives on shingles to melt and bond.
By doing roof repairs during the autumn, the temperatures will be more suited to making roof repairs and even doing a roof replacement. However, keep in mind, if your roof is damaged during the winter, call a roofer anyway since it still might be possible to make repairs when the weather is cold.
Your Roof is Ready for Harsh Weather
Harsh winter weather with snow and ice is hard on your roof. Winter is followed by spring storms and then hot summer heat. While some form of maintenance is needed on your roof all year long, if you choose one season for deep roof maintenance, autumn is a good choice.
Weather conditions are often calmer during autumn, so it's a good time to prepare for more turbulent weather to follow in the coming months. Your roofer can make repairs to flashing, replace shingles, and make other repairs so your roof is returned to good shape. Then the shingles are ready to stand strong against the winter and spring storms to come.
Working Days Are Still Long
If your roof needs a lot of work, the crew might still get the work done in a single day during autumn. Once winter arrives and the time changes, days are much shorter, and your roofing job could take multiple days to complete, especially if your roofer is busy. Repairing or replacing a roof is noisy work, so you'll probably be glad to have the work completed as soon as possible.
Quick repairs are also important when you have a roof leak. If you keep up with annual roof maintenance, your roof may not need many repairs each year unless your roof is damaged by a storm or animals. Plus, if damage doesn't have time to escalate, repairs will be less expensive. Annual roof service is important no matter when you do it, but autumn is a convenient season to have roof work done.
